Ketamine & Concierge Services
Ketamine has been approved by the FDA for pain and anesthesia since 1970. Recently, it was found to be quite helpful, often life changing, in the course of treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders, as well as chronic pain, addiction, migraines, suicidal ideations, and treatment of PTSD. This is, of course, an off-label use, as many medications in mental health are, but it does not mean that it is illegal. Research supports ketamine in series to treat these problems with fabulous results.
Concierge services include in-home treatments, therapy, and infusions. This is particularly helpful for the home-bound, hospice care, and ensuring anonymity. If services are provided remotely, there is an additional service fee added.
Ketamine is a NMDA receptor antagonist, a dissociative drug, a psychedelic agent. It is in the same class of drugs as psilocybin (magic mushrooms), LSD, MDMA, DMT, and ayahuasca. The intravenous medication ketamine is racemic mixture (R and S ketamine), the inhaled ketamine called Spravato, is only the S-ketamine (esketamine), and there are also intramuscular and oral routes. Each has it’s benefits and indications.
Ketamine is short acting, so it can be given in a therapy session of less than an hour. Although you cannot drive home from this treatment, you can have a fairly normal day, as the effect wears off within a few hours. The effect, however, lasts for quite awhile, extending in time with each successive treatment. It is suggested to have an induction series of 6 treatments to create more permanent change, with an availability of “reminder” doses thereafter, as needed. This could be monthly, quarterly, or biannually.
It is preferred to have a treatment on an empty stomach, at least 4 hours, with only water up to 2 hours before. It should be at a time that can be relaxing, when after you are not going back to work, or are needed to do anything for anyone else. This should be a time that is just for you. How many times do you do something just for yourself? It should also be a time where you have prepared for your “journey” with intentions. Intentions are wishes and wants for the SOUL, body and mind. It should also be in a place that is esthetically pleasing, comfortable, and devoid of distractions.
Future solutions include multimodal approach with therapies and substances. Research continues to bring promise of mental health without taking a pill every day. Look to my blog posts to keep you in the know of new modalities as well as announcements of new offerings from our practice!
